About us

Who are the xwelas and where are they found?

The Xwelas are the fishing peoples of the Mono. Dynamic and organized, they are located on the shores of Lake Ahémé, a large lake considered one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in Benin. They form several villages such as Guezin, Segbohouè, Adjatokpa, Tokpadomè, Akodeha, Oudeme, Sehomi etc

Birth of the Association

The association XWELAGBE LA SON NUKON was born with the aim of developing and enhancing the language spoken by the inhabitants of this community. Thus, it was born in July 2022, following the partnership with the NGO Wycliffe Benin. In 2023, the NGO Wycliffe Benin helped us set up a translation team and an exegete. With this translation team, we translate the Bible orally, we work with the administrative authorities, the crowned heads, the district chiefs of the Xwela areas concerned, with the leaders and with the Christian community. We also work with the different social strata of the Xwela community
